Can Children Teach Themselves?

ted.com/sugata

Sugata Mitra

Sugata Mitra gave street kids in a slum in New Delhi access to a computer connected to the Internet, and found that they quickly taught themselves how to use it. This was the moment he says he discovered a new way of teaching.

He calls it the grandmother technique, and it goes like this: expose a half dozen or so kids to a computer, and let them have at it. The only supervision required is an adult to listen the kids brag about what they learn. It?s the opposite, he says, of the disciplinary ways of many parents?more like a kindly grandmother, who rewards curiosity with acceptance and encouragement. And it is a challenge to the past century and a half of formalized schooling.

Since this first experience in 1999, Mitra has been working to extend the notion of self-organized learning to address the needs of poor children, especially in developing countries, who have little or no educational resources. He is convinced that school children can teach themselves just about anything?that they can achieve educational objectives without formal direction. For these kids, formal education, at least as practiced in the U.K., where he is professor of educational technology at Newcastle University, is of little help.

His ideas, however, have implications for formal education in the west, too. Mitra doesn?t have kind words for English schooling, which he says is better suited to the needs of the British empire than the age of Twitter. England ran three quarters of the globe through a vast bureaucracy that relied on the ability of clerks to write letters and tally spreadsheets by hand. Competency in reading, writing and arithmetic was paramount, and formal classroom teaching was the best way to instill the three Rs. But as the tools of education have changed radically, schooling hasn?t. ?The British system, he says, ?was a phenomenal achievement, but it?s out of date. It?s not needed.?

The question is, what is needed?or what will be needed in the future? Mitra thinks self-organized learning will be an important part. ?There may be 10 different ways to do this. I believe I have touched on one of the ways.?

Last night Mitra won the $1 million TED Prize for his work. He will use the money to establish a lab in New Delhi that will put his ideas of a ?School in the Cloud? to the test. The lab will be set up as a kind of cyber caf?, where 48 kids at any one time can go to learn English, considered in India to be key to any child?s future. Volunteer ?grandmothers??retired school teachers, for the most part?will participate via Skype to lend guidance. The cyber caf? will serve as a lab to see how self-organized learning can be scaled globally. ?I want to see if this is feasible,? he says. ?What are the technical problems, what are the management problems? If it works, we?ll have a technique that will level the playing field, and that is the big missing piece.?

Self-organized learning is potentially disruptive to traditional education in the west, and in talking about it Mitra has alienated some teachers. For now, he?s keeping to the developing world, and to the teaching of English.

His long-term ambitions go further, however. ?My agenda,? he says, ?is to see how far this can go.?

How to raise your prices by 300% (almost) overnight - ShoeMoney ...

One of the worst pieces of advice you can ever listen to is: raise your prices if you want to be more profitable. Why? Because it?s grossly incomplete.

In this blog post, I want to share specific actionable things you can do to raise your prices by 300% or more (also referred to as being a premium provider). Besides the obvious benefit of being more profitable, charging premium prices also enables you to grow faster and, counter intuitively, attract better clients. From a lifestyle perspective, you can also hit six figures or higher with only a handful of clients and with very little staff and infrastructure (goodbye complex sales funnels).

I have applied this approach for myself and my clients in multiple markets including markets that are notoriously price sensitive. It works best if you?re in a position to be able to set your own prices / fees.

Becoming a premium provider requires you to implement 2 key things:

  1. Identifying one or more affluent markets that can pay you premium dollars (as the old saying goes: ?You call sell Mercedes to broke people but good luck.?)
  2. Focusing on communicating accelerated results. What do I mean by this? Affluent buyers are not interested in education since they tend to be fairly educated already, and they are extremely busy. This means they don?t want to hear about many DVDs or manuals are in your home study course or how many years of experience you have. Since the #1 thing they value is their time, you have to be able to communicate how you can help them quickly get the results they want with your help.

Here are some real-world examples that will show these principles in action.

Marty is a fit 50-year old who was a spokesperson for a weight loss company (he lost 75 pounds under some very challenging circumstances). He was approached constantly after each public appearance on how he did it. Finding that he wanted a more active role, he decided to launch his own business. Because he had no track record, he felt he needed to start at the bottom and coach people for free. As you can imagine, his results was abysmal because these folks never committed to what he was coaching them on. After he became my client, I recommended that he narrowed his target market to male business owners and executives between 45 and 55.

Why this target market? Marty is a male business owner so there?s affinity and people in that age range tend to be more affluent vs. people in the 20s or 30s (a much, much more crowded market and much more commoditized).

To summarize: in less than 45 days of working together, Marty has sold his 1st client at $800 and his highest sale has been $4,000 so far (my goal is to get him up to $10,000 per client). He?s even landed a world-famous heart surgeon in Italy (!) as a client (Marty lives in Chicago). His big promise is he can help his clients quickly get in the best shape on their life mentally and physically, not how to get six-pack abs (that appeals more to a younger audience).

As a second example, Angela helps folks release destructive habits that lead to overstress (this refers to when you?re so stressed that your physical and mental facilities start breaking down). Until now, she has referred to herself as a stress management expert, which immediately caps her financial results. Instead, I have repositioned her as a peak performance specialist.

With that in mind, she is initially targeting female business owners and executives, and she?s also raised her fees by over 1,000% (with her target market, having stress is sometimes worn as a badge of honor hence the repositioning to a peak performance specialist).

Finally, she has connections to very high net worth families. In this case, she has to raise her fees just to be credible to this target market (as I advised her, if they?re paying you the same as their maids, it?s unlikely they will take you seriously).

Prior to working together, she was spending months trying to figure out how to sell a $47 product and implementing a maze to upsell the buyers into a $297 product. Instead, we have set all that aside and focus on attracting premium clients that can pay her thousands of dollars per sale (with the high net worth families, the goal is to charge 5 figures or more per sale).

So here?s the game plan for you to raise your prices / fees by 300% or more almost overnight:

  1. Identify one or more affluent markets that can afford to pay premium dollars (in most cases, this is usually a subset of your existing list ? In other cases, you may have to go to an adjacent market).
  2. Communicate your benefits in terms of accelerated results vs. how much ?stuff? is in your solution.

By applying these 2 simple principles, you can pass on marginal buyers and focus on premium buyers instead. You can also save weeks and months of your life from having to come up with a gigantic upsell maze that usually cost a fortune to implement.

'Pretty in Pink' came out 27 years ago

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Children of the 1980s, you remember "Pretty in Pink." Molly Ringwald's bizarre home-sewn prom dress. "His name is Blane? That's a major appliance, that's not a name!" ?"What's this? We don't have a candy machine in the boys' room!" "WHAT ABOUT PROM, BLANE?"

The 1986 John Hughes classic came out 27 years ago Thursday, meaning that had Andie Walsh (Molly Ringwald) actually stayed together with either rich pretty boy Blane McDonnagh (Andrew McCarthy) or (our preference) quirky best friend Duckie Dale (Jon Cryer), they might even have kids of their own by now. Possibly adult kids. Maybe even a grandkid.

Everett Collection

"Pretty in Pink" came out 27 years ago Thursday.

Some say "Pretty in Pink" pales next to some of Hughes' other work, such as "Sixteen Candles" or "The Breakfast Club," but there's no doubt it's made its mark on pop culture. Years ago, Jon Cryer told TODAY.com that he's played Alan Harper on "Two and a Half Men" for years, but when he walks down the street, fans who recognize him never yell "Alan!" They always yell, "Duckie!"

In 2012, Jimmy Fallon asked Cryer if the beloved character couldn't be resurrected for a "Duckie Holiday Speclal." Cryer wasn't so sure, pointing out the innate uncoolness of his alter ago. "People forget that Duckie wore lederhosen!" he admonished.

And when McCarthy's memoir came out last fall, TODAY anchor Savannah Guthrie asked him if he felt it was true that Duckie was better for Andie than his own character of Blane. "That is an outrageous theory," McCarthy joked.

It's famously known that "Pretty in Pink" was supposed to end with Andie leaving Blane and ending up back with Duckie, her faithful, fashionable friend. But that ending was reportedly rejected by a test audience (someone find these people and interrogate them about what they were thinking), so Andie got the "happy" ending with richie Blane.

And perhaps that's as it should be. As much as we support Duckie's eternal faithfulness and fire, a 2012 TODAY.com poll showed that a slight majority of readers chose Blane over Duckie anyway. So let's pretend they're content, whoever and wherever they are. And happy anniversary.

Duckie or Blane? Take our new poll, and tell us what you think on Facebook.

Stretchable batteries are here!

The next frontier in electronics are the flexible, stretchable kind. Yes, that means a rubber, bouncy smartphone (eventually), but it also means heart monitors threaded into cardiac tissue. For devices like that to work, they require flexible, stretchable batteries. And such batteries are here, according to researchers who just published their work.

Yonggang Huang, an engineer at Northwestern University, created the battery with materials wizard John Rogers at the University of Illinois, who received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize in 2011 for his work on flexible electronics designed for integration with the human body.

How much give and take does the invention allow? ?We can stretch the device a great deal ? up to about 300 percent ? and still have a working battery,? Huang noted. (Please don't try that with your smartphone's battery.)

?Such stretchable batteries enable true integration with stretchable electronics in a small package,? Huang told NBC News in an email.

The background of the research team means that medical applications will be primarily targeted, but there are other applications for bendy batteries such as wearable solar cells and electric-eye cameras that make studio-quality photographs.

The flexible lithium-ion battery reported today in the journal Nature Communications completes the flexible electronics package with a cordless power source. When the battery runs out of juice after about eight hours, it is recharged wirelessly.

To make the battery, the researchers start with tiny, individual, rigid battery storage components arranged next to each other. The bendy and stretchy characteristics stem from tightly packed, wavy wires that connect these components.

?When we stretch the battery, the wavy interconnects unravels, much like yarn unspooling, while the storage components almost keep undeformed, because of their much larger rigidity than the interconnects? Huang explained.

The breakthrough was demonstrated with a light emitting diode that continues to work when stretched, folded and twisted on a human elbow. It continued to work well through 20 recharge cycles.

Make Yourself At Home With Home Improvement | Thompson Real ...

Home improvement projects provide something for every homeowner, whether it is sprucing up a tired home, or preparing to get the most from a potential sale, there is no end to the benefits available. The article that follows offers terrific advice for anyone wanting to work on their home.

Shop around for the best deals. New flooring is very expensive if you do not shop around for good deals. There are bargain places and discount supply stores that will help.

An easy way to protect walls and floors from marks, and to protect your young children while you?re at it, is to pad furniture with sharp edges. Local retailers should have corner protectors and foam tapes you can use to dull sharp furniture edges or objects that your child is sure to collide with at some point. Tape down wiring to prevent accidents such as tripping over them or even more serious issues.

Before making a home purchase, get a professional to inspect it. By doing this, you do not have to look for everything that needs to be replaced or fixed. An objective professional will provide you with all the necessary information without any argument or haggling to the price of the home.

When you wish to paint a home or just a few walls, then you really need to figure out how many buckets of paint you?ll need. Taking measurements and estimating the cost of supplies is the best way to find out how much a job could cost to do. Take your time, and do calculations the right way.

When you are looking for people to help you with a home renovation project, have several alternates in mind who can help in case there is any problem. It is wise to have a backup plan in place in case something goes wrong. This also holds true in this case.

Home improvement is not just for the professionals on TV. It can be done enjoyably by almost anyone. It might just be a new paint color in your bedroom, or you could go all out and remodel your kitchen, but whatever your choice is will bring not only comfort to your home, but value as well. Get started today by using the tips from this article.

For more real estate info, visit: http://www.latimes.com/classified/realestate/. Home improvement is something that applies to everyone from time to time. There may be different motivations, but every homeowner thinks about home improvement. Regardless of whether it?s for appearance or extra money, home improvement can benefit anybody.

About that Google Settings app that appeared on your device today

Google Settings

As part of its new Google+ sign-in initiative that went live today, Google pushed a silent update to the Google Play Services app to support the new feature, which also brought along a new app called Google Settings. Google Play Services updates in the background routinely, much like the Play Store itself, in order to have phones up to date and syncing properly. The updates don't usually install new apps, but there's nothing to worry about here, the Google Settings app is indeed supposed to be there.

That being said, it doesn't seem all that useful, as it just provides shortcuts to the settings menus of other apps on the phone -- like Google+, Maps and Location. These settings could all be accessed previously, but in order to have everything working out of the box and have a settings area set up for the new Google+ sign-in, Google had to push something out there. We may have preferred if there was some kind of notice of what was going on though.

Going forward it's likely that Google will use this app to house more than just a few settings shortcuts -- and the functionality could easily just be baked into the general OS settings as well. For now, just let it be -- at least the icon isn't too ugly.

South Korea firm had U.S. contract while investing in Iran gas: GAO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A South Korean construction company reported to have recently engaged in Iran's energy sector had a contract with the U.S. government even as Tehran came under pressure for its disputed nuclear program, a U.S. government watchdog said on Monday.

Daelim Industrial Co had a nearly $1.5 million U.S. government contract to build family housing at a military base in South Korea at some point between mid-2011 and late 2012, the General Accountability Office said in a report on Monday. The GAO is the investigative arm of Congress.

Under U.S. sanctions law, any foreign company that has an investment in Iran's energy sector equal to or greater than $20 million is subject to punishments including being cut off from the U.S. financial system. Such companies should also be denied contracts with the U.S. government, it says. The GAO did not say how much Daelim's investments in Iranian energy were worth.

The U.S. sanctions aim to hinder Tehran's nuclear program, which the West believes is enriching uranium that could be used to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Iran denies.

The sanctions law signed in August gave the Obama administration the authority to punish companies that help Iran develop its energy resources, an important source of revenue for the country.

Daelim was one of at least seven companies from China, India, South Korea and South Africa that continued to have investments in Iran in 2012, the GAO said in December, in a report required by a U.S. sanctions law.

A Daelim spokesman in Seoul said the company was simply completing a construction project in Iran that predated the U.S. sanctions.

He added that the building contract did not constitute an investment in Iran's energy sector, as stipulated in the U.S. sanctions law, and that Daelim had not signed any new contracts in the Islamic Republic since 2010.

Daelim, which the GAO said had helped to develop Iran's South Pars gas fields and a liquefied natural gas project in Tombak, was the only one of the companies found also to hold a contract with the U.S. government, the GAO said on Monday.

The GAO has not determined whether the activities of the companies are sanctionable, a determination that would be made by the State Department and other agencies. The GAO provided a copy of the report to the State Department, which declined to comment.

Gloomy Italians vote in election crucial for euro zone

ROME (Reuters) - Italy voted on Sunday in one of the most unpredictable elections in years, with many voters expressing rage against a discredited elite and doubt that a government will emerge strong enough to combat a severe economic crisis.

"I am pessimistic. Nothing will change," said Luciana Li Mandri, 37, as she cast a ballot in the Sicilian capital Palermo on the first of two days of voting that continues on Monday.

"The usual thieves will be in government."

Her gloom reflected the mood across Italy, where many voters said they thought the new administration would not last long, just the opposite of what Italy needs to combat the longest slump in 20 years, mounting unemployment and a huge public debt.

The election is being closely watched by investors whose memories are fresh of a debt crisis which forced out scandal-plagued conservative premier Silvio Berlusconi 15 months ago and saw him replaced by economics professor Mario Monti.

"I'm not confident that the government that emerges from the election will be able to solve any of our problems," said Attilio Bianchetti, a 55-year-old building tradesman in Milan.

Underlining his disilluion with the established parties, he voted for the 5-Star Movement of comic Beppe Grillo.

An iconclastic, 64-year-old Genoese, Grillo has screamed himself hoarse with obscenity-laced attacks on politicians that have channeled the anger of Italians, especially a frustrated young generation hit by record unemployment.

"He's the only real new element in a political landscape where we've been seeing the same faces for too long," said Vincenzo Cannizzaro, 48, in Palermo.

Opinion polls give the centre-left coalition of Pier Luigi Bersani a narrow lead but the result has been thrown open by the prospect of a huge protest vote against Monti's painful austerity measures and rage at a wave of corruption scandals.

A weak government could usher in new instability in the euro zone's third largest economy and cause another crisis of confidence in the European Union's single currency.

Television tycoon Berlusconi, showing off unrivalled media skills and displaying extraordinary energy for a man of 76, has increased uncertainty over the past couple of months by halving the gap between his centre-right and Bersani.

"I am pessimistic. There is such political fragmentation that we will again have the problem of ungovernability" said Marta, a lawyer voting in Rome who did not want to give her family name. "I fear the new government won't last long."

Another Roman voter, lab technician Manila Luce, 34, said: "I am voting Grillo and I hope a lot of people do. Because it's the only way to show how sick to the back teeth we are with the old parties."

Voting continues until 10 p.m. (4 p.m. EST) and resumes on Monday at 7 a.m. Exit polls will be published shortly after polls close at 3 p.m. on Monday. Full official results are expected by early Tuesday.

Snow in the north was expected to last into Monday and could discourage some of the 47 million eligible voters. Authorities said they were prepared for the weather and in the central city of Bologna roads were cleared of snow before voting started.

TOPLESS FEMINISTS

Several bare-breasted women protested against Berlusconi when he voted in Milan. They were bundled away by police.

The four-time premier, known for off-color jokes and a constant target of feminists, is on trial for having sex with an underage prostitute during "bunga bunga" parties at his villa.

Most experts expect a coalition between Bersani and Monti to form the next administration, but whatever government emerges will have to try to reverse years of failure to revitalize one of the most sluggish economies in the developed world.

The widespread despair over the state of the country, where a series of corruption scandals has highlighted the stark divide between a privileged political elite and millions of ordinary Italians struggling to make ends meet, has left deep scars.

"It's our fault, Italian citizens. It's our closed mentality. We're just not Europeans," said voter Li Mandri in Palermo.

"We're all about getting favors when we study, getting a protected job when we work," she said. "That's the way we are and we can only be represented by people like that as well."

ECONOMIC AGENDA

Even if Bersani wins as expected, Analysts are divided over whether he will be able to form a stable majority that can force through sweeping economic reforms.

His centre-left is expected to have firm control of the lower house, thanks to rules that give a strong majority to whichever party wins the most votes nationally.

But a much closer battle will be fought for the Senate which is elected on a regional basis and which has equal law making powers to the chamber.

Berlusconi has clawed back support by promising to repeal Monti's hated new housing tax, the IMU, and to refund the money. He relentlessly attacked what he called the "Germano-centric" policies of the former European Union commissioner.

Think-tank consultant Mario, 60, said on his way to vote in Bologna that Bersani's Democratic Party was the only group serious enough to repair the economy: "They're not perfect," he said. "But they've got the organization and the union backing that will help them push through structural reforms."

Despite Berlusconi's success, Grillo has tapped into the same public frustration as the conservative tycoon and pollsters say his 5-Star Movement of political novices could overtake the centre-right to take second place in the vote.

Rivals have branded Grillo a threat to democracy - a vivid image in a country ruled by fascists for two decades until World War Two. Several voters who spoke to Reuters said Grillo was not the answer because of his lack of concrete policies and the inexperience of those who will sit in parliament for 5-Star.

"Grillo is a populist and populism doesn't work in a democracy," said retired notary Pasquale Lebanon, 76, as he voted for Bersani's Democratic Party in Milan.

"I'm very worried. There seems to be no way out from a political point of view, or for being able to govern," said Calogero Giallanza, a 45-year-old musician in Rome as he also voted for Bersani.

"There's bound to be a mess in the Senate because, as far as I can see the 5-Star Movement is unstoppable."

Montana House panel advances GOP tax bills

HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- Two Republican tax-cut proposals in Montana are advancing toward a full House vote while the governor's $400 rebate plan stalls.

The House Taxation Committee on Monday advanced a plan to cut the statewide property tax assessment. The panel also backed a reduction in the business-equipment tax by exempting companies' first $250,000 in equipment.

Committee chairman Mike Miller says the full House will consider both proposals soon.

But Miller says the committee will sit on Gov. Steve Bullock's proposed $400-per-homeowner tax rebate. The measure has not been the preferred choice of Republicans.

Miller says the measure could be acted on later in the session or perhaps included in another bill.

The Republican says competing tax-cut proposals are still alive and will need to be prioritized at session's end.

Catholic activists petition LA cardinal not to join papal conclave

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Roman Catholic activists on Saturday petitioned a U.S. cardinal to recuse himself from taking part in selecting a new pope so as not to insult survivors of sexual abuse by priests committed while he was archbishop of Los Angeles.

The activists delivered a petition with nearly 10,000 signatures to the North Hollywood church where Cardinal Roger Mahony resides.

"It's a total slap in the face to victims to think (Mahony) can cover up 25 years of child sex abuse and then go prancing off to Rome like a prince of the Church," said Joelle Casteix, western regional director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

As archbishop of Los Angeles from 1985 until 2011, Mahony worked to send priests known to be abusers out of state to shield them from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s, according to church files unsealed under a U.S. court order last month.

Although his successor, Archbishop Jose Gomez, removed him from all public and administrative duties, Mahony has announced his intention to be among 117 cardinals allowed into the Vatican's Sistine Chapel to vote for the next leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Last week, Pope Benedict XVI, 85, announced his resignation effective February 28, making him the first pope in centuries to abdicate rather than die in office.

His eight-year reign will be remembered by many for the child sex abuse scandal in Europe and the United States - most of which took place in the 1980s but which came to light more recently.

In California, at a news conference outside the St. Charles Borromeo Church, where Mahony is in residence, members of the groups held up signs reading, "Respect the victims. Honor the church. Hold leaders accountable."

"This should be a time for new beginnings," said Chris Pumpelly, a spokesman for social justice nonprofit Catholics United, before delivering the petitions to the church. If Mahony were to vote, "it would be a step backward. It would be a validation of the old ways."

It was unclear whether Mahony was at the church at the time, or if he would receive the documents before he left for Rome.

Earlier on Saturday, Mahony was deposed for more than three hours about his handling of sex-abuse cases. It was the first time he was asked about the church files unsealed last month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Influential Italian magazine Famiglia Cristiana, or "Christian Family," has also questioned whether Mahony should be part of the conclave. Many readers responded online that he should not.

On Friday, Mahony took to Twitter to repeat his intent on voting: "Just a few short hours before my departure for Rome. Will be tweeting often from Rome, except during the actual Conclave itself. Prayers!"

How dinosaurs grew the world's longest necks

rancisco Gasc? under the direction of Mike Taylor and Matt Wedel

Plant-eating dinosaurs called sauropods had the longest necks in the animal kingdom. Here an adult Brontomerus mother.

By Charles Choi, LiveScience

How did the largest of all dinosaurs evolve necks longer than any other creature that has ever lived? One secret: mostly hollow neck bones, researchers say.

The largest creatures to ever walk the Earth were the long-necked, long-tailed dinosaurs known as the sauropods. These vegetarians had by far the longest necks of any known animal. The dinosaurs' necks reached up to 50 feet (15 meters) in length, six times longer than that of the current world-record holder, the giraffe, and at least five times longer than those of any other animal that has lived on land.

"They were really stupidly, absurdly oversized," said researcher Michael Taylor, a vertebrate paleontologist at the University of Bristol in England. "In our feeble, modern world, we're used to thinking of elephants as big, but sauropods reached 10 times the size elephants do. They were the size of walking whales."

Amazing necks

To find out how sauropod necks could get so long, scientists analyzed other long-necked creatures and compared sauropod anatomy with that of the dinosaurs' nearest living relatives, the birds and crocodilians.

"Extinct animals ? and living animals, too, for that matter ? are much more amazing than we realize," Taylor told LiveScience. "Time and again, people have proposed limits to possible animal sizes, like the five-meter (16-foot) wingspan that was supposed to be the limit for flying animals. And time and again, they've been blown away. We now know of flying pterosaurs with 10-meter (33-foot) wingspans. And these extremes are achieved by a startling array of anatomical innovations." [ Image Gallery: 25 Amazing Ancient Beasts ]

Among living animals, adult bull giraffes have the longest necks, capable of reaching about 8 feet (2.4 m) long. No other living creature exceeds half this length. For instance, ostriches typically have necks only about 3 feet (1 m) long.

When it comes to extinct animals, the largest land-living mammal of all time was the rhino-like creature Paraceratherium, which had a neck maybe 8.2 feet (2.5 m) long. The flying reptiles known as pterosaurs could also have surprisingly long necks, such as Arambourgiania, whose neck may have exceeded 10 feet (3 m).

The necks of the Loch Ness Monster-like marine reptiles known as plesiosaurs could reach an impressive 23 feet (7 m), probably because the water they lived in could support their weight. But these necks were still less than half the lengths of the longest-necked sauropods.

Sauropod secrets

In their study, Taylor and his colleagues found that the neck bones of sauropods possessed a number of traits that supported such long necks. For instance, air often made up 60 percent of these animals' necks, with some as light as birds' bones, making it easier to support long chains of the bones. The muscles, tendons and ligaments were also positioned around these vertebrae in a way that helped maximize leverage, making neck movements more efficient.

In addition, the dinosaurs' giant torsos and four-legged stances helped provide a stable platform for their necks. In contrast, giraffes have relatively small torsos, while ostriches have two-legged stances. [ Image Gallery: Animals' Amazing Headgear ]

Sauropods also had plenty of neck vertebrae, up to 19. In contrast, nearly all mammals have no more than seven, from mice to whales to giraffes, limiting how long their necks can get. (The only exceptions among mammals are sloths and aquatic mammals known as sirenians, such as manatees.)

Moreover, while pterosaur Arambourgiania had a relatively giant head with long, spear-like jaws that it likely used to help capture prey, sauropods had small, light heads that were easy to support. These dinosaurs did not chew their meals, lacking even cheeks to store food in their mouths; they merely swallowed it, letting their guts break it down.

"Sauropod heads are essentially all mouth. The jaw joint is at the very back of the skull, and they didn't have cheeks, so they came pretty close to having Pac Man-Cookie Monster flip-top heads," researcher Mathew Wedel at the Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif., told LiveScience.

"It's natural to wonder if the lack of chewing didn't, well, come back to bite them, in terms of digestive efficiency. But some recent work on digestion in large animals has shown that after about 3 days, animals have gotten all the nutrition they can from their food, regardless of particle size.

"And sauropods were so big that the food would have spent that long going through them anyway," Wedel said. "They could stop chewing entirely, with no loss of digestive efficiency."

What's a long neck good for?

Furthermore, sauropods and other dinosaurs probably could breathe like birds, drawing fresh air through their lungs continuously, instead of having to breathe out before breathing in to fill their lungs with fresh air like mammals do. This may have helped sauropods get vital oxygen down their long necks to their lungs.

"The problem of breathing through a long tube is something that's very hard for mammals to do. Just try it with a length of garden hose," Taylor said.

As to why sauropods evolved such long necks, there are currently three theories. Some of the dinosaurs may have used their long necks to feed on high leaves, like giraffes do. Others may have used their necks to graze on large swaths of vegetation by sweeping the ground side to side like geese do. This helped them make the most out of every step, which would be a big deal for such heavy creatures.

Scientists have also suggested that long necks may have been sexually attractive, therefore driving the evolution of ever-longer necks; however, Taylor and his colleagues have found no evidence this was the case.

In the future, the researchers plan to delve even deeper into the mysteries of sauropod necks. For instance, Apatosaurus , formerly known as Brontosaurus, had "really sensationally strange neck vertebrae," Taylor said. The scientists suspect the necks of Apatosaurus were used for "combat between males ? fighting over women, of course."

Taylor and Wedel detailed their findings online Feb. 12 in the journal PeerJ.

College sports vs. academics: A losing game

SALT LAKE CITY ? Attending a college football game has become a beloved American ritual that isn't likely to go away anytime soon. But U.S. students struggling with college costs might feel less like cheering if they knew how much they really pay for college athletic programs, and what doesn't get funded as a result.

A recent study shows that between 2005 and 2010, spending by college athletic departments rose more than twice as fast as academic spending on a per-student basis. And, colleges spent three to six times as much on athletes as on other students, according to a report by the Delta Cost Project at the nonprofit American Institute for Research.

The group analyzed data from the U.S. Department of Education and from USA Today Sports' College Athletics Finances Database to reach its conclusions.

Expensive traditions

Findings showed that the oft-stated axiom that college sports pay for themselves is untrue, except at about six national powerhouse schools with famous football programs. Athletic programs at most colleges and universities are heavily subsidized by student fees, and by institutional funds that could otherwise be used to support academic programs.

In the six highest-profile football conferences, spending per athlete exceeded $100,000 in 2010, the report showed. As spending on athletics climbed, so did tuition for students at four-year public universities ? by an average of 38 percent between 2005 and 2010. Meanwhile, state and local funding support for higher education inched up just 2 percent during the same period.

The disparity in funding for academics and athletics during the recession was the main finding of the report, said its author, Donna Desrochers.

"In all of the divisions we looked at, the amount of money being provided as a subsidy to athletic programs continued to increase, even when institutions were cutting back on academic funding," she said.

Those subsidies were made up of student fees, institutional funds and state-appropriated higher education funds, Desrochers said.

Winners and losers

Elite sports programs with lucrative network television contracts have the smallest subsidies. It's the schools trying to keep up with them in lower divisions that tend to rely most heavily on subsidies, because their programs don't have the revenues to support their athletic programs.

Desrochers' research showed that strong, winning athletics programs can benefit their schools, particularly if they have a championship football team.

"It brings great visibility, but the effects are not long-lasting," she said. "In terms of donations, those are coming into the athletic department, and are not benefiting the university itself."

The few powerhouse schools where athletic budgets top $70 million got the majority of their revenue from ticket sales, contributions, payments for television agreements, and participation in bowl games and tournaments. However, at more than seven out of eight of Division I schools, athletic programs still cost more than they brought in and were subsidized, often heavily, by student fees and state and institutional funds. Those subsidies are the largest and fastest-growing source of athletic-program revenue for lower-tier schools.

Counting costs

USA Today?s college athletics finances database, on which Desrochers' report is based, is a response to calls for greater transparency in reporting the true cost of college athletics. It showed that at University of Michigan, a Big Ten powerhouse, only 0.2 percent of athletic funding came from subsidies. Subsidies at most schools are much higher.

Tunisia's new premier promises inclusive government

TUNIS (Reuters) - Tunisia's prime minister-designate Ali Larayedh, a hardliner from the main Islamist Ennahda party, said on Friday he hoped to form a "government of all Tunisians", but opposition leaders swiftly signaled discontent.

Tunisia plunged into political crisis on February 6 when the assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid on February 6 ignited the biggest street protests since the overthrow of strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali two years ago.

President Moncef Marzouki asked Larayedh to draw up a government within two weeks after he was formally nominated for prime minister by Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi.

"We will start consultations to form a new government ... a government of all Tunisians," Larayedh said in brief remarks after meeting the secular president.

He urged political parties, trade unions, businessmen and journalists to support his government to achieve the objectives of the North African country's revolution and build democracy.

Ennahda's choice for prime minister raised hackles among opposition parties, some of whom accuse Larayedh's Interior Ministry of failing to curb Islamist violence, although he is credited for acting firmly against al Qaeda-linked militants.

"The decision deepens the crisis because Larayedh headed the ministry responsible for the killing of Belaid and violence that has spread throughout the country," said Zied Lakhdar, a leader in the Popular Front, in which Belaid was secretary-general.

The Interior Ministry and Ennahda have denied they had any hand in Belaid's killing, which they have condemned.

Mahmoud Baroudi, a leader of the secular Democratic Alliance opposition party, said Larayedh's appointment would aggravate tensions and increase anger in the streets.

"He was responsible for leniency with Islamist violence against human rights activists," he said, blaming Islamists for disrupting opposition meetings and assassinating Belaid.

No one has claimed responsibility for Belaid's killing.

JAILED UNDER BEN ALI

Ennahda is the biggest party in the National Constituent Assembly with 89 of its 217 seats. Marzouki's secular Congress for the Republic party (CPR), the second largest with 29 seats, has already said it will join a new Ennahda-led coalition.

Larayedh, 57, is viewed as part of Ennahda's hardline wing, which rejects any role for parties linked to the Ben Ali era.

A maritime engineer, Larayedh spent 15 years in jail under Ben Ali. He became interior minister when the previous government was formed in December 2011.

Outgoing Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, who resigned on Tuesday, refused to head the next government after his own Ennahda party rejected his plan for an apolitical technocrat cabinet to prepare for elections.

He was seen as a moderate overruled by Ghannouchi, who says the last election gave Ennahda a popular mandate to rule in a power-sharing deal with moderate secular parties.

"Larayedh is not a man of consensus," said Nejib Chebbi, leader of the secular Republican party. "He failed during his work as head of the Interior Ministry."

Tunisia, whose transition from autocracy has so far been far less violent than those in neighboring Libya and Egypt, faces rifts between Islamists and their opponents that threaten the stability of its fledgling democracy and ailing economy.

Political uncertainty has put negotiations on a $1.78 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund on hold and prompted Standard and Poor's to lower its long-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit rating on Tunisia on Tuesday.

While Ennahda and Marzouki's CPR together would wield a narrow majority in the assembly, Larayedh may seek additional partners. The leftist Ettakatol party, which joined Jebali's government, has not said if it will serve under Larayedh.

Hechmi Hamdi, leader of the moderate Islamist Popular Petition party, which holds seven assembly seats, said his group would stay in opposition, accusing Larayedh of responsibility for the death of two prisoners on hunger strike and the torture and ill-treatment of protesters in the restive Siliana region.

Fredrica Duke: Opposites Attract

We've all heard that opposites attract. My parents were just about the most opposite people you could find.

My mother, Evelyn, was quiet, elegant and intelligent. My father, Maurice, was loud, lovable and crass. Taste was not exactly his strong suit except, of course, his great taste in women.

They met at a party. He saw this stunning, very young, exotic-looking woman modern dancing. Alone. Seductively. Twenty years older, he was intrigued.

Here are the Cliff Notes to get you up to speed: They dated. He knocked her up. He said he didn't want kids. She was set to have an abortion. Her family strong-armed him or he had a change of heart -- or both. She had their first child, my brother Alan, but first they had a quickie wedding in Vegas -- where else? For the first meal in their home together, my mother cooked. My father complained about the way she made the eggs. She threw the whole pan of eggs at him. Two years after the first child, my mom got pregnant with me.

Life was not quite happy in the Duke home. The family tried living on the beach in Malibu. My mother's beloved cat Jezebel got hit by a car on PCH and died. She decided this would not be the place to raise her kids. It would be Beverly Hills, known to have a great public school system. The house on South Roxbury Drive cost $25,000 and came with a cat named Hangover. My father arranged for my mom, who happened to have very good taste, to go into business with some dude who was an interior decorator. They were doing some interior decorating all right -- on beds. You get the idea. Things were getting shady. But, shit happens. My mother had convinced herself that my father, who was Mickey Rooney's manager and hung out with him a lot, must have been scoring a lot of broads with the Mick. I wasn't there, I wouldn't know. My father was physically handicapped. It never stopped him from scoring great looking women, my mom included, but he wasn't the player my mother had assumed and which she used to justify having an affair with my father's so-called "friend." I would not find out any of these sordid details until I was in my twenties.

From the moment of their divorce (made legal in Tijuana, where else?), our parents became the best of friends and even better parents. We were a family unit. As a family, though we lived in two different homes, we did everything together. During the week, my father worked at various studios as a producer of B, if not C, movies, and we went to school. On Friday night, we went out to a restaurant. All four of us. Saturday morning, a deli for breakfast. Sunday morning, my mother would often cook a brunch. In the afternoon, just us kids would head off to see my father's mother, at least on his custodial weekend. For a few years my mother dated a lawyer who would end up not marrying her, though she seemed to be auditioning hard for that job.

My father had a close friend named June Wilkinson, a va-va-voom B-movie actress and Playboy model and sometimes the fifth wheel at our family meals. A romantic involvement between those two was never revealed, though I have my suspicions. My father dated a woman named Rachel on and off for several years. No one in either parent's love life ever became more important than us, the children.

For many years, we all joked that after 25 years of divorce, we should have a silver divorce anniversary party. So we did. It became a very large production of a party. My brother and I put on our producer hats -- my brother much more so than me. The Lehr family made the engraved invitations. The venue would be The Friars Club and there would be a roast with top comedians who were friendly with my father. Much of the roast material was written by a one-time "Honeymooners" writer, Bob Hilliard. It was one of the greatest parties I had ever been to. My father had just survived colon cancer a year before. My mother was there for my father during his illness. They were both always there for each other. At the 25th divorce anniversary party, my father made a speech. He stood on the dais, looked at his ex-wife, my mother, in the audience, and said: "It was so much fun divorcing you Evelyn, lets get divorced again." She laughed. In fact, by this time in life, my father was my mother's only and best friend in the world.

Which brings us to 10 years after the 25th divorce party. Now, my parents were divorced 35 years. My brother the lawyer did some calculating. He realized they were married just shy of my mother being eligible for dad's Social Security. She was getting near that age. He was getting way up there. My brother thought, our father will die and our mother will not be able to live on his Social Security. They had only been married nine years. My father and brother concocted the plan: my parents would get married. Again. My parents were already more married and loyal to each other than most legally married couples.

My father made an honest woman out of my mother, not once but twice, when he went with her to renew their vows in a courthouse in Santa Monica. I had never known the old fashioned, corny side of my mother until I saw the glow in her smile the moment she remarried the love of her life. Our plan was that our father's much younger bride -- our mother -- would take really good care of our father when he got very weak and old. That plan went out the window when after only a few years of my mother collecting $1,200 a month in Social Security, she became very ill. She was diagnosed with lung cancer, which had spread to her bones. She would die within three months. My 85-year-old father went to his 66-year old wife's funeral in shock. He would die in my arms a year later with me yelling at him in the hospital, "Don't die dad, everyone will think you were in love with Evelyn!" My parents might not have been a conventional couple, but they had a love for each other that was deep and, in their own way, loyal. They were my romantic role models.

After the disastrous first meal my mother cooked, she learned to make a favorite dish for my father. Matzo brei. She perfected the dish so as not to have to throw it on him.

TextSecure :: Private SMS/MMS (for Android)

A partner to Thoughtcrime Labs' secure voice application,?RedPhone Beta, the free TextSecure :: Private SMS/MMSfor Android brings seamless encryption to your text messages. An attractive solution for the paranoid, or elected officials who wouldn't otherwise be able to resist sabotaging their careers.

Easy Setup
Like RedPhone Beta, TextSecure is designed to be as accessible as possible. Upon startup, the app prompts you to create a passphrase and then copies your existing SMS and MMS messages into a new encrypted database. That way, even old messages on your phone will be unreadable to anyone attempting to access them. Your original messages will remain in their existing location, though TextSecure gives you the option to delete them. TextSecure aims for truly end-to-end protection, encrypting your messages at rest on your phone, and when they're flying through the air.

When reviewing apps, I like to take screenshots of the setup process so I can refer to them later; I was pleased to note on the Samsung Galaxy Note II that the app prevented me from grabbing screens, both during the set up process and once the app was running. However, users should note that this behavior is not consistent across all Android models. On my Samsung Galaxy S III I was able to capture a screenshot of the set up procedure, but the app only allowed all-black screenshots later.

Sending Messages with TextSecure
Writing a message from within TextSecure is similar to the way standard messaging app works. You type out a phone number, enter name of a contact, or search contacts and favorites in the address field. Below, you type your message and can attach media to your texts. The app can also handle group text messages, and will automatically send known TextSecure users encrypted messages and plain text messages to non-TextSecure users.

Like RedPhone, TextSecure is seamlessly integrated into Android. Once installed, you can send secure texts from the built-in messenger app and TextSecure will handle it from there. Unlike RedPhone, TextSecure does require a wireless data connection and cannot send messages over Wi-Fi.

Users should note that messages sent from the built-in messenger will be automatically encrypted, if the recipient also has TextSecure, and the message will be copied into the app's encrypted database. However, a plaintext version will be visible in the sender's built-in messenger app, which strikes me as problematic.

More importantly: when you receive an encrypted message from another TextSecure user, if you've recently entered your passphrase to the app, the message will appear in the notification center in plain text. While this does make using TextSecure much easier, it does mean that your messages are completely visible on your screen?potentially without warning. This is why it's important to a time limit for how long the app can keep your passphrase cached (more on this later).

Users should note that they can quickly un-cache their passphrase from the notification center. An open padlock in the upper right-hand corner of the screen indicates that the passphrase is cached, and the phone is potentially insecure. Simply open the notification center, tap on the "Passphrase Cached" entry in the notification center. The text of incoming messages will not be displayed in the notification center, and you'll have to enter your passphrase the next time you try to open TextSecure. From the TextSecure settings menu, you can also select to not have messages displayed in the status bar but they will still appear in the notification center.

Boehner Idle as GOP Calls for Select Committees on Benghazi

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have suggested the formation of select committees since November 2012, one month after the assault which killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other State Department employees. Such select committees could provide a channel for Benghazi survivors to come forward and tell their stories to Congress?without legal repercussions from the federal government.

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told USA Today on Wednesday, "I want to know who the survivors are and for the appropriate committees to interview them." He explained further, "We know it was clear from the beginning it was a terrorist attack. I want to know what kind of help they asked for."

Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), a member of the armed services committee, all called for a joint select committee to investigate Benghazi in November. The South Carolina Senator is threatening to hold up the nomination of CIA pick John Brennan if the White House will not release more information on the attack.

Both Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), along with other Democrats,?rebuffed the idea of a joint select committee to investigate the Benghazi attack.

?At this point, I think that the standing committees of the House, whether they be the (State Department) oversight committee or the intelligence committee, are working diligently on these issues,? Boehner said shortly after his Senate colleagues floated the idea in November.

The GOP senators were not the only ones blown off by Republican leadership on the House side to create a select committee to study the deadly Benghazi attack. In November, Congressman Frank Wolf (R-VA), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, called for a select committee to investigate the attack.

According to Wolf?s November press release, the congressman ?reminded Speaker Boehner of a September 25 letter to President Obama signed by eight House members requesting more information about the attack and the administration?s response.?

Speaker Boehner did not heed Wolf?s call for a select committee in the last Congress. In late January, Wolf refiled the resolution to establish a House Select Committee to investigate the Benghazi attack. Boehner has yet to comment or act upon the resolution.

Breitbart News sent an inquiry to Speaker Boehner's office on Thursday afternoon that has gone unanswered.

DETROIT Wen Li, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry in Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was one of 126 researchers selected to receive a $50,000 Sloan Research Fellowship for 2013 from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The fellowships, awarded annually since 1955, are given to early-career scientists and scholars whose achievements and potential identify them as rising stars the next generation of scientific leaders.

Li's research focuses on the most exquisite details of chemical reactions. "Many things in everyday life come down to chemical reactions," said Li. "In my lab, we study the motion of nuclei and electrons during such reactions. While people have been studying the nuclear motion of chemical reactions for a while, we are focusing on electrons, which for a long time people considered too fast to study. To date, no technique has been developed to track down their motions in real time, and this is what my research program aims to do in the next few years. This ultimately could help control chemical reactions."

"The Sloan Research Fellows are among the best of the best of young scientists," said Hilary Ratner, vice president for research at Wayne State University. "Dr. Li is most deserving of this award along with the many other accolades he has received in his young career."

In late 2012, Li received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), which is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government to science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Li will receive a $1 million grant for that achievement, which will aid his Department of Defense research in providing a dynamic picture of how lasers interact with matter.
